Netflix Self-Torture Experiment Trilogy #2 - Paul Blart: Mall Cop
This wasn’t a suggestion from anyone; I just knew from the moment I saw the commercials that it was going to end up in the self-torture experiment.
Synopsis from Netflix: Funnyman Kevin James (“King of Queens”) stars as Paul Blart, an overzealous security guard who finds himself in way over his head when he attempts to thwart a criminal mastermind’s (Keir O’Donnell) plot to rob an entire shopping mall. Bobby Cannavale, Jayma Mays and Shirley Knight also star in this family-friendly laffer from director Steve Carr, which shares more than a few similarities with the much raunchier Observe and Report.
My thoughts (slight spoilers included): I’m a little buzzed right now because this movie drove me to drink, so I’ll just give it two quick summaries…
Short version: It turns out that all of the funny parts of this film were in the commercials and, if you remember correctly, those parts were not at all funny.
Slightly longer version: Paul Blart: Ball Cop is actually pretty similar to Seth Rogen’s Observe and Report…an overzealous security guard who can’t make it in to the real police force gets a chance at redemption when crazy shit starts happening at the mall which also happens to endanger an attractive female mall employee. The main difference between the two movies, though, is that Observe and Report actually made me laugh a couple of times, whereas Paul Blart: Mall Cop only made me want to drink away the pain. [One out of five stars.]
