Netflix Self-Torture Experiment Trilogy #6 - Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

This was a suggestion from red-kryptonight. I really don’t know what to expect from it, but movies based on video games don’t have a good track record in the previous self-torture experiments (see: Alone In The Dark and Max Payne).

Synopsis from Netflix: Undercover agent Chun Li (Kristin Kreuk) seeks justice and peace in this action-packed adaptation of the megahit video game franchise Street Fighter. Employing her signature high-kicking style, Chun Li is a force to be reckoned with. The cast includes Neal McDonough as M. Bison, Chris Klein as Nash, Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog and Black Eyed Peas singer Taboo as Vega. Chun Li is known in gamer circles as “the First Lady of Fighting Games.”

My thoughts: Bo-ring! I’m just gonna go with a bullet point summary here because my thoughts about this movie are pretty random:

  • I have some familiarity with this franchise having played Street Fighter II quite a bit as a teenager, and the story didn’t seem to correspond with anything I remember about the video game.
  • The plot line centered around M. Bison’s attempt to overtake rival gangs and reclaim the neighborhood in which he grew up, and it felt a lot like a slightly updated version of the cheesy 80’s movie cliché where the evil businessman tries to take over the rec center.
  • Oh my god, the acting was terrible.
  • A member of the Black Eyed Peas was in this film for some reason and it wasn’t even will.i.am? Come on, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was able to get will.i.am. Shit, even CNN got his hologram on election night.
  • Normally a bad movie can earn at least two stars from me if it has some decent action scenes or fight scenes, but this film just didn’t grab my interest at all.

I’ll say it one more time: bo-ring! [One out of five stars.]
