Netflix Self-Torture Experiment Trilogy #22: Masked & Anonymous
This was another suggestion from red-kryptonight.
Synopsis from Netflix: A wandering troubadour named Jack Fate (Bob Dylan) is busted out of prison by his former manager (John Goodman) so he can perform at one last concert that may rekindle his career — and perhaps help bring together his divided country, which is torn by civil war. Co-stars Jeff Bridges, Penélope Cruz and Jessica Lange.
My thoughts (bizarre spoilers included): I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie as confusing as this one, and I’m not just saying that. Everything is so nebulous: the government is corrupt but the rebels and the counterrevolutionaries are apparently just as bad, the television network is evil but the managers they’re bullying around are seemingly just as nefarious, and Bob Dylan doesn’t make any fucking sense at all.
As the “plot” progresses, we find out that Bob Dylan is actually the son of the president who happens to be on his deathbed and Mickey Rourke will soon take over (I have no idea if that’s supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing). Then Luke Wilson kills Jeff Bridges with a guitar and Bob Dylan gets arrested for it because Jessica Lange fingers him to the police. As he’s being taken away, he gives a soliloquy which doesn’t make any fucking sense at all. The end. [One out of five stars.]
