Netflix Self-Torture Experiment Trilogy #46: Very Bad Things
This was a suggestion from @insooutso.
Synopsis from Netflix: Director Peter Berg’s dark comedy chronicles a bachelor party gone horribly wrong. Kyle (Jon Favreau) and his pals are off to Vegas to celebrate Kyle’s upcoming marriage to Laura (Cameron Diaz) when things take a decidedly bad turn. After an accidental death, murder and cover-up, guilt starts to take its toll. As the body count rises, ex-pal Robert (Christian Slater) inadvertently proves that a bride will do anything to have her dream wedding.
My thoughts (minor spoilers included): Very Bad Things? More like Very Bad Movie! Am I right, people?
*cough*
No, but seriously, this movie was awful. Somehow it managed to take several likable actors and make them all annoying as hell. Even Cameron Diaz, who had no part in any of the various crimes that took place (until the very end at least), was typecast as a raging bridezilla that the viewer had little sympathy for.
Look, I understand that it was supposed to be a dark comedy. I like dark comedies. Heathers is one of my favorite movies and I’m pretty much the only person I know that liked The Cable Guy. The problem with Very Bad Things is that the comedy aspect was left out of the dark comedy, and we’re left with an hour and 40 minutes filled mostly with people yelling at each other. It’s extremely painful to watch because there’s no one to root for and there isn’t any moral lesson to learn other than “don’t kill a hooker in Vegas.” [One out of five stars.]
