Netflix Self-Torture Experiment Trilogy #48: Sorority Boys
This movie looks like it will be sort of like The Hot Chick, except with three dudes in drag instead of just one. Oh boy.
Synopsis from Netflix: Strapped for cash, three fraternity playboys (Barry Watson, Harland Williams and Michael Rosenbaum) make one last attempt to live the high life — cheaply — by masquerading as girls! In this hilarious gender-bending comedy, our “heroes” pick up their heels, put on some makeup and move into the Delta Omicron Gamma (or D.O.G.) sorority house. But their chauvinistic ways come back to haunt them as they get a crash course in the opposite sex!
My thoughts: The way this movie started out, I thought it was going to be absolutely horrible. Typical frat boy behavior was being glorified and strong feminist women were pretty much being vilified. It didn’t get much better as the three protagonists from K.O.K. first went undercover in the sorority house (not-so-hilariously called the D.O.G. house).
Somewhat surprisingly, the latter half of the film wasn’t really that bad if you ignore the obvious implausibilities. Seriously, in real life, these guys would have had to shave at least three times a day to stay as hairless as they were the entire time.
Cheesy as it was, at least Sorority Boys was able to bring up issues like female body image and gender double standards without being too overly simplistic. Even though characters on both sides were made in to caricatures, the overall message was a relatively positive one. That being said, the film was still pretty dumb. [Two out of five stars.]
