Netflix Self-Torture Experiment Trilogy #53 - The Twilight Saga: New Moon
I saw the first Twilight movie and was really confused by it. Let’s see if the second film is any better…
Synopsis from Netflix: In this sequel to Twilight directed by Chris Weitz (American Pie), Forks, Wash., resident Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is reeling from the departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and finds comfort in her friendship with Jacob Black, a werewolf (Taylor Lautner). But before she knows it, she’s thrust into a centuries-old conflict, and her desire to be with Edward at any cost leads her to take greater and greater risks.
My thoughts: Since this movie just came out on DVD, I’ll try to keep the spoilers to a minimum and I have to admit I liked it better than the first one.
My biggest problem with the original Twilight (aside from the inexplicable vampire baseball scene) was that Bella’s character was simply passive and brooding and she didn’t actually do anything but play the damsel in distress. I was expecting the same thing in New Moon, and for most of the film that was still the case; however, she did show some ability to assert herself towards the end.
In the Edward vs. Jacob feud, I’m not on either “team.” It seems pretty obvious who Bella is going to end up with anyway, although admittedly I haven’t read the books upon which the movies are based. What I really didn’t understand (and I’m going to be vague here for the purposes of reducing spoilers) was why Edward’s ultimate question to Bella seemed like such a shock. If she was already prepared to make such a huge sacrifice for him, then why would his “one condition” be that big of a deal?
I don’t know what to think about the phenomenon that is Twilight. Now that I’ve seen the first two films, I can’t say that I think it’s totally stupid…I guess I just can’t connect with any of the characters enough to really give a shit. If the third movie involves Bella transforming in to an ass-kicking zombie or something, then maybe I’ll change my mind. As of right now, I suppose I’m just not part of the intended demographic. [Two out of five stars.]
Completely random side note (with a very minor spoiler): About 50-55 minutes in to New Moon, Bella goes to a movie with Jacob and some dipshit kid. The movie-within-the-movie is called Face Punch, and the snippets of dialogue and sound effects that you can hear sound AWESOME. I’d really like somebody in Hollywood to make that film.

I’m getting concerned for your mental health. All of these awful movies could have a sort of “Clockwork Orange” impact on your mind.
