Netflix Self-Torture Experiment Trilogy #58: Cat-Women of the Moon
B-movie madness from 1952!
Synopsis from Netflix: A space shuttle expedition led by Cmdr. Laird Granger (Sonny Tufts) and co-pilot Kip Reissner (Victor Jory) lands on the dark side of the moon after being hit by an asteroid. Helen Salinger (Marie Windsor), the sole female, guides the others to a cave with a livable atmosphere, having been steered there telepathically by cat-women who’re planning to steal the rocket and conquer Earth. Can the crew resist the women’s psychic and seductive powers?
My thoughts: This movie definitely has a lot of camp value with its giant moon spiders and telepathic cat-women, but I found myself bored through most of it. I suppose it’s a good thing that it only lasts 64 minutes because the campiness probably would have worn thin if it had gone on too much longer.
The plot of Cat-Women of the Moon is pretty funny for its absurdity, and yet the film itself has few laughs. It’s actually quite a paradox (at least for me) because I don’t know which aspect I should favor more. Should I give it credit for being original and off-the-wall, or should I discredit it for being relatively dull and uneventful? I guess the easy answer is to just split the difference and call it a day. Being a lazy man, that’s exactly what I’ll do. [Two out of five stars.]
