Netflix Self-Torture Experiment Trilogy #63: Bride Wars
I really like Anne Hathaway, but this movie just looks awful.
Synopsis from Netflix: Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway star as Emma and Liv, best friends who become worst enemies when they realize their respective weddings are scheduled on the same day at their dream venue — the Plaza Hotel. It’s no holds barred as these two bridezillas go on a ruthless rampage toward matrimony. The romantic comedy also stars Candice Bergen (as the wedding planner), Bryan Greenberg, Kristen Johnston and Chris Pratt.
My thoughts (disappointingly predictable spoilers included): Even when I have preconceived notions about a movie, I do my best to give it a fair viewing and judge it solely on its merits (or lack thereof). With Bride Wars, my preconceived notions were unfortunately confirmed very early on. When Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson first meet with their shared wedding planner, the following sentences are uttered: “A wedding marks the first day of the rest of your life. You have been dead until now. Were you aware of that? You’re dead right now.”
As a pro-feminist, there are a lot of things I roll my eyes at during movies but don’t mention in my reviews, but this could not be ignored. To put forth the idea that a woman isn’t complete (or even alive) unless she gets married just made my brain shut off.
Sure, I watched the rest of the movie but it was essentially a blur of petty sabotages and insults with each bride-to-be trying to outmaneuver the other. There were also the requisite gender stereotypes and bridezilla moments which, while not unexpected, were still mind-numbingly annoying. Of course everything worked out in the end, but it was highly unrealistic and I had pretty much mentally checked out anyway. [One out of five stars.]
